Team Vanguard began the implementation of Membership, Finances, Cases, and Organizing for The NewsGuild of New York (CWA Local 31003) last summer. They determined it was best to split the project into halves, and tackled the core system first, and leaving the member-servicing modules for later on.
In November, the training team visited The NewsGuild, whose offices are in the middle of bustling Times Square, for several days of training and on-site guidance. By the end of the week, UnionWare was the primary and central source of membership data at the local and entirely accessible through the web.
Earlier this year, the team worked to complete the configuration of the Cases and Organizing modules. They also established connections to a third-party website using our API Framework. By late-April, when it was all put together, it was time to head back to the Big Apple and train a different set of users.
Conveniently, Local reps take care of everything for The NewsGuild members, both current and potential, so we were able to teach two very different modules to the same group over a couple of days. There was even a guest appearance by Cam, our Product Manager, who spent a day demonstrating the subtler points of the recently-enhanced Organizing module.
Having maintained grievances in spreadsheets for many years, the ability to use the Cases module is a massive step forward. The Staff reps also tracked external organizing in spreadsheets – now they have a modern and mobile system and are super-excited to be using it.
The NewsGuild has lots to look forward to and will be part of the discussion as we continue to plan simple yet powerful tools to help further engage and empower members.
